September 29 Dan Zen Expo Exhibit
Sketches 2
Dedicated to Dave and Teresa Kuruc at Mixed Media
Dan Zen has a dozen plus sketch books filled with drawings and ideas. Many of the early Dan Zen games were hand drawn and we will show some originals in this exhibit. The sketchbooks are generally a combination of ideas for apps and games, environmental and social ideas, and philosophy. Here is a SECOND set of sample sketches from a few of the books - a half dozen or so from each.
▲ The stack of Dan Zen sketch books over the last 20 years. The older ones tend to be on the bottom but they get a little mixed up. The sketches below come from four of the sketch books picked randomly with dates of 2003, 2010, 2011, 2012 (estimated).
Coonle (2003) ▲ a sketched out version of sleeping in a cocoon - I have been imagining that for many years - this version shows wind-up rocking, air holes, quad sound, bunk extensions, molded insert, etc. The slow turning would put weight on different areas as you sleep.
Masked Map (2003) ▲ Sketch for collective control game where players collectively guide boat around sea and accomplish tasks. Zen is redoing the 2003 prototype concepts in an upcoming ZIM Socket project. See a video of the prototype: VIEW VIDEO
Rich Deck (2003) ▲ The interface sketch for the Dan Zen future company and franchise trading game (Flash). PLAY RICH DECK
Dan Zen Deck Signature (2003) ▲ The signature for the Deck of Creations interface - the squarish signature at left was selected. Zen does a different signature for each site design - usually trying out a bunch like this. VISIT DECK
Tree Menu (2010) ▲ various thoughts on hierarchy with discussion of navigation, XML, and using the sketch as potential research projects. The tree was used as a menu for Dan Zen. VISIT TREE
Node Naming (2010) ▲ Thoughts on Nodism including numbering of nodes, content and context, fractals, and isomorphisms - see the Dan Zen PHILOSOPHY EXHIBIT
Isomorphisms of Hierarchy (2010) ▲ Early layout for mapping hierarchy across different systems including a tree, hierarchy, cells or nests, boxes and arrays. This would feed into one of the main slides in the CREATIVITY FRAMEWORK
Swoodle (2011) ▲ An exploration of continuous doodle and how fill color never touches when lines cross. This led to the drawing app - Swoodle. USE SWOODLE
Car Thoughts (2011) ▲ Painted patterns on tires, and car curling reminder. CAR CURLING
Fingy (2011) ▲ Have your finger follow moving markers. Also multiple people can play on same device - a bit like twister. Not made yet.
DreamShape (2011) ▲ Zen has imagined a number of dream applications. Here we try to visualize or incorporate shapes into dreams. Or draw shapes from our dreams. Once we do this then we can flip so draw the shapes from the shapes we tried to visualize. Or try and visualize again the shapes drawn from dreams.
Dream Names (2011) ▲ Exploration of dream accessories.
Dreamification (2011) ▲ The obvious dream app - view and record our dreams. There is concern that the signals that are our dreams do not look like dreams - well... neither do TV signals. So it should be a matter of translating our dream signals into the same types of visions we see when we are dreaming.
DreamShape Possibilities (2011) ▲ Categories of dream apps. There are dozens of other sketches relating to dreams and potential partners. Sci-fi goes through periods of interest in dreams. Most actual research has to do with health issues - boring! Where is the entertainment research!
Mediated Reality (2012) ▲ Preparation for the Function Keys Conference talk on Mediated Reality - Past, Present and Future. MEDIATED REALITY
Together Games (2012) ▲ The Together Button was introduced in the Dan Zen game, Touchy - and also is used in Tilty. When players want to start the game, they press the Together Button at the same time. This avoids the requirement of Internet connection. It is based on a long standing physical procedure for instance, the start gun at races. You know, ready, set, GO!
Mechanics of Creation (2012) ▲ A summary page on Nodism that would then be used to help build the: CREATIVITY FRAMEWORK
Wearable Computing (2012) ▲ Extensions of the Hangy concept where we wear our current mobile devices (or old devices). Why are we waiting around to get screens manufactured in our clothing when this will do just fine! Clingy will be Zen's next iteration. SEE HANGY
Hangy Campaign (2012) ▲ The famous people wearing Hangy campaign - how would they express themselves. The full set is at the sides of the Hangy site here: SEE HANGY
Masky (2012) ▲ Still to be made... a series where you make eyes with your mobile device.
Remote Eyes (2012) ▲ Dan Zen has done experiments where he looks out of his hands and others to see behind him as shown in this video: SEE VIDEO
Hangy Site (2012) ▲ The original sketch to organize the Hangy promotional site. SEE HANGY
Hangy Usage (2012) ▲ A possible future campaign for Hangy where stony face folks are able to express themselves with their wearable devices. As well as some use cases such as for activism and fashion. SEE HANGY
Interacting Hierarchies (2012) ▲ Dan Zen working out how groups of hierarchies can communicate with one another in the brain and in a computer program SEE AI EXHIBIT
Hat Designs (2012) ▲ Dan Zen has been hunting for a space beret and these are techniques he has tried to remodel hats into a futuristic fez. SEE DRESSUP EXHIBIT
Trippy (2012) ▲ The interface sketch for Trippy, which people wear in front of their eyes and navigate to various effects. VISIT TRIPPY
Mobile Moustache Mysteries (2012) ▲ A mobile ready redesign for the Moustache Mysteries originally created in the mid nineties in Director Shockwave. It would require a full recoding of this complex AI world but it would be worth it - so look forward to these in the future to bring the mysteries to new mobile viewers.
Mobile Stick Aliens (2012) ▲ A mobile remake of the Facebook app called Stick Aliens. Just a light, what kind of stick alien are you? You can get the idea here in this Flash rendition: TRY STICK ALIENS
Mimic Bots (2012) ▲ A combination of Zen's rolling bots and a mobile game where you recreate motions. Still to be made... hmmm... could be a while.
We hope you enjoyed the second installment of sketches. There probably will be one more before the Expo is through. Of course, check out the first sketches exhibit in the Expo Archives.
