They say, he is Hollander Maui! Yes... Dan Zen takes on the pseudonym of Hollander Maui (being part Dutch and born in Hawaii) when presenting photographs en Focuso (out of focus). Zen's in-focus shots are posted on Flickr. Let's see some shots!Hollander ▲ Maui Intro - this video introduces the Focuso technique of Hollander Maui. It is done, somewhat tongue in cheek - almost a parody of the Photographer as an artist. However Zen feels there is merit in the Focuso technique - much like there is merit in Impressionism.
2020 Money ▲ In this abstract piece, Dan Zen imagines what money might look like in the near future with OLED technology. This picture sold at the Focus Gallery for $450. Lights out of focus was what first attracted Zen to what he termed Focuso photography - out of focus on purpose. In 2006, Zen registered the focuso.org domain: FOCUSO.ORGDelphine (Far Focuso) ▲ This was one of the first Focuso portraits by Hollander Maui. The details are abstracted leaving the image simplified and timeless.
Delphine (Near Focuso) ▲ To demonstrate, we can see this second picture of Delphine has more detail, similar perhaps to an impressionist painting. Zen, as Photographer Hollander Maui, is constantly adjusting focus to bring out more or less details depending on what he wants in the shot. Some chide Zen for losing the focus ring... quite the contrary, Zen is using depth of field as a medium and is much more conscious of focus than most. It is comparatively easy to get things in focus.
Self Portrait ▲ Often, an artist who works in different mediums, does a self portrait. Viewers might react to this self portrait in different ways depending on whether they are used to the medium. What is your reaction to this self portrait? Perhaps Zen was trying to say that he was there - in that far out environment (far out of focus).
Cities ▲ Cities, with their concrete and patterns, make magical lands when shot en focuso - like castles in the clouds!
Mother and Daughter on Bench ▲ Capturing the moment of our time in impressionistic photographs.
Girl Blue ▲ Focuso simplifies - captures the aura of the scene. It brings out the colors and composition. Look at the beautiful mauves and tangerines. mmmm. Can you feel the summer day!
Beaches ▲ Hollander Maui loves beaches! The colors, the umbrellas, hey... just being on a beach!
Focuso at the Focus ▲ Video from the Hollander Maui opening at the Focus Gallery in May of 2013. Unfortunately, it rained but there is a good flow of friends and commentary.
