June 23 Dan Zen Expo Exhibit
Facebook
Dedicated to Aron West for early Facebook works
Dan Zen joined Facebook in the early days and started posting in 2006. One of Zen's games is called Primals where you try and order your friends by the order they joined Facebook. Zen had social sites already so site building communities like MySpace did not initially interest him but when friends showed up - it became a lot of fun. Here is a summary of Social Zen.
▲ First Post - taken when Dan Zen and Sheridan Interactive Media volunteers were helping the Canadian Olympic Team make a CD ROM used to prepare for the Chinese Olympics. The shot was on the way back from the team building exercises at Blue Mountain. It was a great experience to meet the athletes and organization, to sing Karaoke for the first time and to meet Dashan - a Canadian cultural hero in China. The shot uses a long shutter and zoom technique Zen was teaching one of the students.
▲ Early Facebook profile pics - many taken from scanned photos collected for the Dan Zen Inventor site. VISIT INVENTOR (Flash)
▲ More recent picture profiles. In retrospect, a wide variety of glasses and headgear of various sorts. Certainly some silly and a zog of zany. Lots of stories and good fun. Thanks to all the photographers who snapped these - for every pic there are dozens of pics captured only in memory. DANZEN ON FACEBOOK
▲ Dan Zen Page - recently surpassed 500 likes, this is the page that posts various Dan Zen launches and information to Facebook. DANZEN PAGE
▲ Dan Zen administers a number of Facebook Pages some under pseudonyms like Cosbian Fisbate for his collection of posts by others and Hollander Maui for his Focuso photographs. COSBIAN FISBATE HOLLANDER MAUI
▲ TronOn Facebook App where you can add Tron effects to any of your Facebook pictures. TRY TRONON
▲ Snipisode Facebook App where you can tell stories one status at a time - automatically cut up and scheduled. Snipisode then posts the snip for you daily at the time you desire. See the Dan Zen Expo Storytelling Exhibit for examples. TRY SNIPISODE
Stick Aliens ▲ Made for Facebook during the "What kind of _______ are you?" craze. Stick Aliens featured a cool radial interface to assign attributes in a proportioned way. You can drag the outer properties or the inner eye of the oracle and a Stick Alien that matches your mood would appear on your profile. This demonstration version shows the possible matching aliens under the oracle. TRY ORACLE
▲ Primals Facebook App where you order a random five of your friends based on which friend joined Facebook first. UNFORTUNATELY, Facebook has decided that giving an app a friends list is too dangerous so the app now only works with friends who have accepted the app - which is ridiculous. So if you do not have at least five friends with the app - it will not work. TRY PRIMALS
Facebook Party ▲ in 2007 Dan Zen launched a party app. Unfortunately, this was just before Facebook took apps off the walls and everyone heralded the death of apps (until Farmville came along). Still possibly a good idea, the app featured Facebook icons that walked around with legs spelling the word party. The icons would talk to you based on interests. There was also a popularity rating based on factors such as the number of friends, posts, fans, and how many times you interacted with the party. An admin tool was planned for version two with settings like which friends you wanted to see fall down drunk or wear a lamp shade. SAMPLE PARTY
▲ Facebook Groups - Dan Zen has started and administrates a number of Facebook groups of which the most active is Mediated Reality and other number of technology groups. MEDIATED REALITY
▲ Facebook Notes - over 200 notes have been posted by Dan Zen. Notes are more permanent than the ethereal post which tends to get lost in the feed. VIEW NOTES
